02: Lure Pattern Examples

Between The Lines - Ch 06: Lure Introduction

You will develop lure patterns that suit you, your boat, the grounds and the time of the season you fish. However, the following are several patterns that have performed very well in most game and sportfishing areas and are a compilation of many years of successful results from all over the globe. The lures and colours in their specific positions should be run as listed. Only the middle or shotgun lures can be changed without detrimentally affecting the pattern. Baitfish and predators are similar in all the areas that are fished and lures are quite universal in either success or failure.

The Explorer Pattern

The Explorer Pattern is used either in areas that you have never fished or in areas where anything is possible and you want to keep the rods bent.

The downfall of the Explorer pattern and this kind of mixing of lure and leader size is often the smaller lures will get more hits as their leaders are lighter, thus enhancing their presentation.

You may notice as the patterns target specific sizes of species, the range of lures used is more limited, however, the four basic colours remain in their positions.

The Light Tackle Pattern

(6-10kg) is used in areas for sailfish, and marlin of all species to 100kg plus every other species of gamefish. All hooks are coated and chemically sharpened. Note the hook sizes refer to Pakula-coated hooks, not standard sizes referred to in all the other patterns. All leaders are 100 to 150lb and no more than 10-feet long.
